About this training
There is increased focus within the counselling and psychotherapy profession concerning the psychological needs and wellbeing of our ageing population. It is encouraging that there is a willingness to reach out to older couples and individuals who are experiencing difficulties, but it can feel daunting too, especially when you are starting out and maybe at a distance in years from this age group.
When is old age anyway? This seems to have shifted with ‘new young 70 year olds’. Is it nearer to 80 now or does it depend on how we are feeling at any given time? You can feel set in your ways and on a downward path from 50+. However upbeat attitudes have become, old age and death are inevitable and human beings are all too often beset with levels of distress, loss and deteriorating capacities.
How can we be both sensitive and imaginative in working with older people, when they may feel isolated, stuck, depressed, or lack purpose? It takes time to unravel their narrative, to stay with the images that unfold, to grapple with the sticking points and help the individual discover a greater sense of meaning to their life and death. The task can be both challenging and rewarding and often lies in silent spaces beyond words.
Who is this course for?
For anyone in the therapeutic and caring professions interested in reflecting on their therapeutic work with older clients. The workshop will inevitably touch on our own fears and experiences and those closest to us.
What will it cover?
This will be an experiential, interactive day. We will find imaginative ways to help get alongside older clients, touch on some of the archetypes linked to this age group and explore a few dream images that may have emerged in our therapeutic work with this age group. Please bring these with you.
